Kosmix: iPad app (2011)

my role

In addition to managing a small design team, I was the hands-on design lead on the Kosmix iPad app. I worked closely with the product manager and engineering lead to brainstorm, strategize and prioritize.

challenge

As a small cross-functional team within the company, we were tasked to define, design, prototype and implement an iPad application in just eight weeks. Each member of the team was working on other projects as well, and none of us had experience designing or developing for the iPad.

solution

Similar to the Kosmix web site, the app allowed users to explore magazine-style topic pages with relevant videos, photos, news, opinions and communities. For the mobile version, we decided to emphasize on browsing rather than searching, and designed a rich, visually compelling UI.
We also displayed additional content, related to the original topic, to allow for a continuous browsing experience.

Social Genome Project (2010)

my role

Interaction and visual design lead for a simple prototype. The goal was to show how Kosmix' categorization engine can be utilized to present relevant topics in real time. This prototype was instrumental in the successful acquisition of Kosmix by Walmart.

challenge

The goal was not to come up with a fully designed product, but rather to find a way to showcase Kosmix' amazing technology in the context of social media. We had access to the Twitter fire hose, but wanted to show a richer and more engaging experience.

solution

Since the time frame was very tight, we kept the design simple and easy to implement. The priority was to load content quickly and to present a dashboard of relevant videos, photos, news, commentary, opinion, communities and links to related topics.
